The school garden at the Amigos School was constructed during summer 2012 by Amigos parents and CitySprouts volunteers when the school moved into the Upton Street building from Putnam Avenue, a few blocks away. The garden has a garden shed and compost bin and five raised garden beds including an herb garden, a perennial garden, a strawberry patch and three vegetable beds. Felted woolly pockets were added along the fence during spring 2014 to supplement the garden with greens and pollinators. The outdoor classroom garden serves this Spanish immersion school from kindergarten through 8th grade.
CitySprouts is a school garden program founded on the belief that all children should have the chance to explore science through hands-on, real-world experiences from an early age. By observing, experimenting, and discovering in the garden, students build a strong foundation in science learning and curiosity about the natural world.
A CitySprouts Garden Educator visits the Amigos School every other week throughout the year. Garden Educators partner with the classroom teacher to engage students in investigations and projects.
CitySprouts also offers volunteer opportunities in the garden year-round. If you’d like to get involved, please email [email protected].
