CitySprouts January Update

CitySprouts January Update
Posted on 01/13/2023
This past month, our Garden Educators (GEs) greatly enjoyed seeing students’ excitement and wonder as they discovered and learned about the valuable functions of worms and snails. We brought garden snails and red wigglers into classrooms for students to observe hands-on and it was gratifying to witness students growing more comfortable and their curiosity building even when their first reaction was, “ew, that’s gross!” Looking ahead, our educators and students will be working together using grow kits to cultivate various types of edible mushrooms for scientific observation.

As we welcome in the New Year, we at CitySprouts are undergoing quite a transformation. We are saying goodbye to our founding director of 22 years, Jane Hirschi, and we are incredibly excited to welcome Susan Diller as our new Executive Director. Solomon Montagno, another long term member of our team, is stepping down and Melissa Wender, who has been working as a GE, has assumed the Program Director position. Our metamorphosis, if you will, is reflective of your school gardens as they endure the winter but we are working hard to set ourselves up for an amazing Spring season.
