One of our district-determined measures requires that our students explore primary sources to analyze them through persuasive essays. This year, in conjunction with Sra. Butler-Rahman, the 6th graders completed two such essays relating to the impact of Hammurabi’s Code and the importance of the Nile River in the establishment of the Egyptian civilization. Overall, the students responded well to these tasks and their writing improved through these experiences, here is a sample of the latest essay that they completed.  

7th Grade
Our seventh grade classes recently designed their own religions. They borrowed elements of either Buddhism or Hinduism and were required to also include aspects of monotheistic religions. These projects were extremely creative and focused on developing a symbol and detailing their geographic setting. They also established an economic and demographic focus as well as designing five principles for their followers. Most importantly, they had to borrow an idea from another student-designed religion from each class to then modify it to their own. In this sense, they learned that many religions have much more in common than is often portrayed, and that they often build off of similar ideas.
