Interview with Ms. Sarah Marrero, Incoming Principal of the Amigos School

What do you find most exciting about being the Amigos Principal?
I’m most thrilled about being able to work with students, make decisions that will help our students achieve success and strengthen the mission and vision of the school. I firmly believe in bilingualism and it’s power to change lives.
What are your values?
Hard work. I have always been a hard worker. To love and believe in people. That’s very important. Of course, I believe that education is extremely important in one’s life. I would like all children at Amigos to receive the best education possible, have a brilliant future, and I know they are capable of this.
What do you find most important about bilingualism?
Being bilingual opens doors. You can read more books, get to know more people, have more friends, get better jobs, and travel with ease. Being bilingual can change your life. If I did not speak two languages, my life would be totally different. I wouldn’t have the same job, or family. It would all be so different. Bilingualism also helps your brain’s development and expands your intelligence.
What’s your favorite color?
I’d say it’s purple but I’m not sure why. I never wear purple neither do I own many purple things. I also love blue because it’s my oldest son’s favorite. We have talked about how much we love the blue of the sky on a sunny day. Purple has stuck since I was little and used to say: “Oh yes, I love purple!”
What is your favorite book or novel?
I always say Cien años de soledad (One Hundred Years of Solitude). It’s my favorite book in Spanish. In English, my favorite is The Moor’s Last Sigh by Salman Rushdie. Both are stories about families, and they follow different generations of the same family. That’s an interest of mine. There’s also La casa de los espíritus (The House of Spirits). A book I loved as an adolescent was Watership Down, a classic.
What is your favorite word?
I guess one word I like is passion, passion for education, passion for languages, passion for reading. Empathy, another word I like a lot. I think that’s a very important one. Empathy is a very crucial trait for human beings to have.
