Long gone are the days when I was a teacher and we were ‘allotted’ one or sometimes two field trips per year. Amigos continues to be fortunate, with support from the FOA, (Friends of Amigos), the general budget and the Visual and Performing Arts Department of CPS to have a healthy amount of funding for field trips that enhance the curriculum and make connections to the local museums, theatres, and places of interest in Cambridge and in the greater Boston area. Here is a sampling of the field trips in the works that compliment and connect students’ learning:
JrK – Ms. Noelle Danian is planning a trip to the Berklee Performance Center this month to see a performance of the book, ‘Click, Clack, Moo”, an award winning children’s book by Doreen Cronin and illustrated by Betsy Lewin.
- Grade 8 – Ms. Caryn Collins is planning a trip to the Emerson Stage with the 8th graders to see a student matinee of ‘Mother Hicks’. Mother Hicks is the first show of The Ware Trilogy -- a series of three plays that follow a young Deaf man named Tuc as he searches for community, understanding, and a place to call home. Inspired by oral traditions gathered by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), Tuc’s journey is set in the context of the Great Depression and WWII.
Grade 6, 7, and 8 Upper school students will enjoy an afternoon at the Museum of Science to view the exhibit entitled, the ‘Maya: Hidden Worlds Revealed”. Mr. Batt and Ms. Ferhani are currently designing a unit of study with other upper school staff about the Mayan civilization, seen through different content lenses. Google, the MOS, and the CPS Social Studies department have extended this offer to the 5th grade teachers and students as well. Teachers will be attending an educator workshop ahead of time to plan for this incredibly exciting event!
