The Literacy and Library Committee works to support students and staff through ongoing and special projects. Some ongoing projects include; setting up adult literacy volunteers to read with children in grades 1-3, helping teachers or literacy specialists with “leveling” books and providing parent volunteers to help in the library.
Helping in the library can include; checking in and shelving books, cataloging, helping with special library events such as author visits, making new book suggestions or volunteering to be a library monitor during the hour before school starts, when the library is used as an alternative to waiting in the cafeteria for early students.
One of our big projects includes the annual Book Swap. For this event families donate books they are done with. These books are then sorted by grade by parent volunteers and each child in the school gets to choose up to 4-5 free books. In addition over 50 individually leveled book bags are put together containing 10 free books and given to individual children in the first and second grades to take home over the summer.
We're looking for anybody who has any expertise in literacy issues and also for anybody who just likes to read and write and would like to help kids do the same. Please join us!
