Dear Amigos Community,
Welcome back! I hope everyone had time to relax and enjoy a different pace of life for a few months. It has been a busy summer at Amigos and I am looking forward to another great year.
My Vision for Amigos
As in previous years, I took some time this summer to reflect on my work at Amigos. I also had time to look at the results of our Family Engagement survey and process your feedback. Thank you for taking the time to respond! Armed with this information, I am excited to continue strengthening our school and community. The vast majority of you responded that you are very happy with the school and particularly appreciate our staff! The major trend for improvement that emerged from the survey is a desire to have clear, timely, consistent, and proactive communication from all school staff. For example, many of you discussed the need for a better calendar and a desire for more notice of school events. This is great feedback for us and I hope that you will notice an improvement!
We have incorporated new and ongoing academic data along with the family survey data to further strengthen our School Improvement Plan. This year we will be writing a two-year plan that will focus on student achievement, culturally responsive instructional practice, family engagement and social and emotional learning. These focus areas align with Superintendent Salim’s District Plan for Improvement and the four anchor district Strategic Initiatives:
- Expand rigorous, joyful, culturally responsive learning experiences [2.2]
- Develop and expand effective inclusive practices in all classrooms [3.2]
- Implement a social, emotional and behavioral learning framework [3.1]
- Engage families as partners with formal ongoing mechanisms that create differentiated opportunities for family voice and engagement [4.1]
As part of our work related to culturally responsive education, I am excited to share with you that along with a staff training, we will also be offering a parent training led by facilitators from The Ethics Initiative at MIT. The Transformative Teaching Initiative was founded on the following belief:
Intolerance and lack of empathy have become a public health crisis, feeding tensions around race, immigration, and economic inequality. Until education fosters character values relevant to peaceful coexistence with differing cultures, policy changes will not prevent hatred, fear, and intolerance more effectively than in the past.

The goals of both the educator and parent programs are for teachers and parents to enhance their lives through a transformative process that will help them see beyond differences to their common humanity and shared purpose, and gain a deeper acceptance of cultural diversity. Please look for more information and details on this exciting training over the next month. I believe that the active participation of Amigos staff and families in this work will deepen and strengthen our Amigos School learning community.
As always, our school mission of bilingualism, biliteracy and multiculturalism continues to guide all our work at Amigos. We know that bilingualism and multiculturalism transform lives and provide distinct and unique opportunities for all our students. We know that together we can create a positive, equitable and forward-thinking environment where our young people can thrive. I hope that our efforts and our beliefs can grow and spread and become even stronger as we work together to build bridges of understanding. I find Cesar Chavez’s words particularly insightful in addressing this challenge, “preservation of one’s own culture does not require contempt or disrespect for other cultures”.
Building Updates and Protocols
There were several projects completed over the summer in the building. Painting was done throughout the building, new lockers were installed and our activity room space was turned into a classroom for our new first grade class. Several teachers and specialists have switched offices in the basement as well in order to accommodate the relocation of the Amigos Community School program to the offices next to the elevator.
The biggest project for this summer was our playground. While the playground is close to being finished, it is unlikely that it will be completed and ready for use by the first day of school. I hope that it will be ready by mid September and that we will be out and enjoying its unique design shortly. In the meanwhile, we will take advantage of Dana Park when possible and look for creative ways to support recess activities in different spaces.
Our safety protocols for the building will remain the same as in previous years. As always all visitors are asked to use the main entrance to the building for both entry and exit and to get a visitor’s pass from the main office. This protocol is aligned with the district protocol, which reads as follows:
Every visitor entering a Cambridge Public School during school hours is required to check in at the Safety Desk/ Main Office at the Main Entrance. After signing in (print name), stating whom they wish to visit, the purpose of their visit and showing proof of identity a visitor’s pass will be issued. They will be asked to wear the visitor’s pass while they are in the building and return the pass and sign out when they leave. Entry and exit ways for the building continue to be the front and back doors. During the school day the side doors will always be locked and should only be used for exit during fire drills. The side doors of the building should not be used unless it is after 3:15 and you are participating in the after school program, in which case you can use Door #8 (Magazine Street side of the building). No doors in the building should ever be propped open or left unlocked. With the safety and security of students and staff in mind, I ask that everyone follow this protocol and work to remind one another of its importance.
New Staff!
Each summer always brings some changes in staffing and I am excited to introduce the new bilingual teachers who will be joining the Amigos Community.
● Sra. Garisbel McDonough– will be our new JK/K teacher. Ms. McDonough comes to us with 12 years of experience from the Hernández School, a dual immersion school in Boston. She has a BA in Education and Psychology from Emmanuel College and a MA in Reading from Boston University. She is also a certified reading specialist.
● Sr. Ernesto Gonzalez– will be our new 1st grade teacher. Mr. Gonzalez joins us with over twelve years experience teaching kindergarten, second and third grade in the Irving, Texas school district. He has a BA in Engineering from San Agustin University in Peru.
● Sra. Katie Hohimer – will be our new 4th grade teacher. Ms. Hohimer has a BA in Education from Eastern Washington University and a MA in Education from Whitworth University. Ms. Hohimer is a National Board Certified Teacher in Reading and has experience teaching in grades 1-5. Most recently she was working as an Assistant Principal in Pasco, Washington.
● Sra. Ann Cason-Snow – will be our new 5th grade teacher. Ms.Cason-Snow comes to us from the Fayerweather School in Cambridge where she was the 5th and 6th grade teacher for many years. She has a BA in History from Macalester College and a MA in Creative Arts in Learning from Lesley University.
● Sra. María Rodríguez Fernández - will be our new Math teacher in the Upper School. Ms. Rodriguez has taught math at both the middle and high school levels. She has a BA and an MA in Computer Science from the University of Oviedo. She also has a PhD in Systems Engineering from the University of Valladolid. Ms. Rodriguez is relocating to Cambridge with her husband and two children as part of the Massachusetts Department of Education Exchange Program with Spain.
● Sra. Mariel Santos – will be our new upper school guidance counselor. Ms. Santos comes to us from the Boston Public Schools. She has a BA in Psychology from the University of Massachusetts and a MA in School Counseling from Cambridge College.
● Sr. Javier Gonzalez-Pisano – will be our new Technology Specialist and Math Interventionist. Mr. Gonzalez-Pisano has a BA and an MA in Computer Science from the University of Oviedo. He has experience teaching math and computer science in both middle and high school. Mr. Gonzalez-Pisano is relocating to Cambridge with his wife and two children as part of the Massachusetts Department of Education Exchange Program with Spain.
● Sr. Carlos Claros- will be our new Health and Physical Education teacher. Mr. Claros has experience teaching in Spain, Costa Rica, New Orleans and Nepal. He has a BA and an MA in Physical Activity and Sports from the University of Granada. He has also worked as a swim and triathlon coach.
● Sra. Yara Liceaga – will be our new building substitute. Sra. Liceaga has worked as a Spanish instructor and Drama teacher as well as a cultural director at the la Universidad del Este in Puerto Rico. Sra. Liceaga also worked as a columnist for El Nuevo Día Newspaper. She has a BA in Education from the University of Puerto Rico.
● Sra. Martha Lugo – will be our new Junior Kindergarten assistant teacher. Ms. Lugo joins us from the Dimock Center where she was a teacher’s assistant and has worked as a teacher assistant for the Chelsea Public Schools. She has a BA from Northeastern and a M.Ed. from Cambridge College.
● Sr. Luis López – will be our new 6th grade social studies teacher. He is a graduate of Bowdoin College where he obtained a BA in Sociology and Latin American Studies. He has experience teaching Spanish in after school programs and working as a teaching assistant. Last year, Mr. Lopez worked as our building substitute.
In addition to these new members, the school Food and Nutrition department has sent us a new kitchen team. Deborah DuPont will be our head chef and Adriana Jimenez and Christine Higgins will support her as cashiers and assistants.

Science Club for Girls is returning to the Amigos School this fall! Clubs for girls in K-5th grade will be held on Fridays from 3-4:15PM beginning October 5th. The Amigos Community School has a new director, Lissette Castillo. Ms. Castillo has worked at Fenway High School in Boston since 2005. She has over 13 years of experience working with youth of color and developing curriculum and teaching the Spanish for Native Speakers courses. She has also worked for 4 years at Sociedad Latina as a curriculum developer & consultant. She has a MA in Teaching MAT (2004) and a Masters in Public Policy M.P.P (2015) from Tufts University. She is committed to challenging and fighting racial inequalities in education through developing curriculum that is relevant, anti-racist, and family / youth-driven.
How to Get Involved at Amigos
Family and community engagement is an essential part of our work. We know that when schools and families work together, children tend to be happier and more successful in school. There are a variety of ways that families can be involved at Amigos. Please take time to get to know our two parent organizations: Amigos School Council (ASC) and Friends of Amigos (FOA). The ASC is a group comprised of parents/guardians and staff members that meets monthly with the principal. We discuss school improvement topics and district policies and the group serves as an advisory committee for school administration. The FOA is a separately incorporated non-profit organization funded and managed by Amigos parents. FOA works to fundraise and organize events such as our upcoming Hispanic Heritage Celebration. Both groups invite you to participate and your participation in either group will be greatly appreciated. Please visit

Please Remember
Classroom instruction starts at 8:55AM. Beginning at this time, important learning takes place each day. While students are required to be at school by 8:55AM, we strongly encourage families to have their children arrive at 8:40AM in order to maximize learning time. Students taking the bus arrive between 8:20AM and 8:35AM barring any unexpected circumstances.
There is no parking in front of the school during arrival and dismissal. Buses need to load and unload, and cannot do so if cars are parked there.

Estimada Comunidad de Amigos,
¡Bienvenidos! Espero que todos hayan tenido tiempo este verano de relajarse y disfrutar de un ritmo de vida diferente durante unos meses. Ha sido un verano ocupado en Amigos y tengo muchas ganas de otro gran año.
Mi visión para Amigos
Como en años anteriores, me tomé un tiempo este verano para reflexionar sobre mi trabajo en Amigos. También tuve tiempo de ver los resultados de nuestra encuesta de Participación Familiar y procesar sus comentarios. ¡Gracias por tomar el tiempo de responder! Fortalecida con esta información, estoy entusiasmada de continuar robusteciendo nuestra escuela y comunidad. ¡La gran mayoría de ustedes respondieron que están muy contentos con la escuela y aprecian especialmente a nuestra facultad! La retroalimentación principal de mejora que surgió de la encuesta es el deseo de tener una comunicación clara, oportuna, constante y proactiva de toda la facultad de la escuela. Por ejemplo, muchos de ustedes compartieron la necesidad de un mejor calendario y un deseo de mayor conocimiento previo de los eventos escolares. ¡Esta es excelente retroalimentación para nosotros y espero que noten una mejora!
Hemos incorporado datos académicos nuevos y los datos de la encuesta familiar para fortalecer aún más nuestro Plan de Mejoramiento Escolar. Este año vamos a escribir un plan de dos años que se enfocará en el rendimiento académico, la práctica de enseñanza culturalmente receptiva, el compromiso familiar y el aprendizaje social y emocional. Estas áreas de enfoque se alinean con el Plan de Mejoramiento del Distrito del Superintendente Salim y las cuatro iniciativas estratégicas del distrito de anclaje:
- Ampliar experiencias de aprendizaje rigurosas, alegres y culturalmente receptivas [2.2]
- Desarrollar y expandir prácticas inclusivas efectivas en todas las clases [3.2]
- Implementar un marco de aprendizaje social, emocional y conductual [3.1]
- Involucrar a las familias como socios con mecanismos formales continuos que crean oportunidades diferenciadas para la voz y el compromiso de la familia [4.1]
Como parte de nuestro trabajo relacionado con la educación culturalmente receptiva, me complace compartir con ustedes que también ofreceremos una capacitación para padres y dirigida por facilitadores de The Center at MIT. El programa de desarrollo de Enseñanza Transformativa está diseñado con la siguiente creencia:
La intolerancia y la falta de empatía se han convertido en una crisis de salud pública que alimenta las tensiones en torno a la raza, la inmigración y la desigualdad económica. Hasta que la educación fomente valores de carácter relevantes para la coexistencia pacífica con culturas diferentes, los cambios de política no evitarán el odio, el miedo y la intolerancia de manera más efectiva que en el pasado.
(Iniciativa de ética en MIT Media Lab 2017-2018)
El objetivo de los programas para padres y educadores es que los maestros y padres mejoren sus vidas a través de un proceso transformador y se inspiren para diseñar técnicas creativas que los respalden en la enseñanza y la crianza de los hijos con valores que impacten positivamente a nuestros jóvenes. Por favor, busquen más información y detalles sobre esta capacitación durante el próximo mes. Creo que la participación activa del personal y las familias en este trabajo profundizará y fortalecerá nuestra comunidad de aprendizaje en la Escuela Amigos.
Como siempre, nuestra misión escolar de bilingüismo, bialfabetización y multiculturalismo continúa guiando todo nuestro trabajo en Amigos. Sabemos que el bilingüismo y el multiculturalismo transforman vidas y brindan oportunidades únicas para todos nuestros estudiantes. Sabemos que juntos podemos crear un entorno positivo, equitativo y con visión hacia el futuro en lo cual nuestros jóvenes puedan prosperar. Espero que nuestros esfuerzos y nuestras creencias puedan crecer, extenderse y fortalecerse aún más a medida que trabajamos juntos para construir puentes de entendimiento. Considero que las palabras de César Chávez son particularmente reveladoras al abordar este desafío: "la perseverancia de la propia cultura no requiere desprecio o falta de respeto por otras culturas".
Novedades sobre el edificio y repaso de protocolos
Hubieron varios proyectos completados durante el verano en el edificio. Se pintó todo el edificio por dentro, se instalaron nuevos casilleros y el espacio de nuestra sala de actividades se convirtió en un aula para nuestra nueva clase de primer grado. Varios docentes y especialistas también han cambiado oficinas en el sótano para acomodar la reubicación del programa de la Escuela Comunitaria Amigos a las oficinas contiguas al elevador.
El proyecto más grande de este verano fue nuestro parque. Mientras que el parque de recreo está a punto de terminarse, es poco probable que se complete y esté listo para usarse el primer día de clases. Espero que esté listo para mediados de septiembre y que pronto saldremos y disfrutaremos de su diseño único. Mientras tanto, utilizaremos Dana Park cuando posible y buscaremos maneras creativas de apoyar las actividades de recreo en diferentes espacios.
Nuestros protocolos de seguridad para el edificio seguirán siendo iguales a años anteriores. Como siempre, se le pide a todos los visitantes que utilicen la entrada principal del edificio tanto para la hora de entrada como para la hora de salida y que obtengan un pase de visitante de la oficina principal. Este protocolo se alinea con el protocolo del distrito, que dice lo siguiente: Se requiere que cada visitante que entre a una escuela pública de Cambridge durante el horario escolar se registre en la oficina de entrada (considerada mostrador de seguridad). Luego de firmar (escribir su nombre en letra de imprenta), indicando a quien vienen a visitar y el propósito de la visita y mostrado un documento de identidad, se le emitirá un pase de visitante. Las personas que visiten la escuela deben llevar puesto el pase de visitante mientras permanezcan en el edificio y devolverlo cuando firman su salida al retirarse. Las maneras de entrar y salir del edificio siguen siendo las puertas delantera y trasera. Durante el día escolar, las puertas laterales siempre estarán cerradas y solo se deben usar para salir durante los simulacros de incendio. Las puertas laterales del edificio no deben usarse a menos que sean después de las 3:15 y usted esté participando en el programa después de la escuela, en cuyo caso puede usar la Puerta # 8 (lado de la calle Magazine del edificio). No hay puertas en el edificio que se puedan dejar abiertas. Con la seguridad de los estudiantes y el personal en mente, les pido a todos que sigan este protocolo y trabajen para recordarse mutuamente su importancia.
¡Nuevo personal!
Cada verano siempre trae algunos cambios en el personal y tenemos nuevos y talentosos maestros bilingües que se unirán a la comunidad de Amigos.

Rodríguez se está mudando a Cambridge con su esposo y dos hijos como parte del Programa de Intercambio del Departamento de Educación de Massachusetts con España.

El Sr. González-Pisano se está mudando a Cambridge con su esposa y dos hijos como parte del Programa de Intercambio del Departamento de Educación de Massachusetts con España.
● Sr. Carlos Claros- será nuestro nuevo maestro de Salud y Educación Física. El Sr. Claros tiene experiencia enseñando en España, Costa Rica, Nueva Orleans y Nepal. Tiene una licenciatura y una maestría en Actividad Física y Deportes de la Universidad de Granada. También ha trabajado como entrenador de natación y triatlón.
● Sra. Yara Liceaga - será nuestra nueva sustituta del edificio. Sra. Liceaga ha trabajado como profesora de español y maestra de teatro, además ha sido directora cultural en la Universidad del Este de Puerto Rico. Sra. Liceaga también ha trabajado como columnista para el periódico El Nuevo Día. Ella tiene un BA en Educación de la Universidad de Puerto Rico.
● Sra. Martha Lugo - será nuestra nueva maestra asistente de Kindergarten. La Sra. Lugo se une a nosotros desde el Centro Dimock donde fue asistente de maestra y ha trabajado como asistente de maestra para las Escuelas Públicas de Chelsea. Ella tiene un BA de Northeastern y un M.Ed. de Cambridge College.
● Sr. Luis López - será nuestro nuevo maestro de estudios sociales en el sexto grado. Es graduado de Bowdoin College donde obtuvo un BA en Sociología y Estudios Latinoamericanos. Tiene experiencia enseñando español en programas después de la escuela y trabajando como asistente de enseñanza. El año pasado, el Sr. López trabajó como nuestro sustituto del edificio.
Además de estos nuevos miembros, el departamento de comida y nutrición escolar nos ha mandado un nuevo equipo de cocina. Deborah DuPont será nuestra cabecera de cocina y Adriana Jiménez y Christine Higgins la apoyarán de cajeras y ayudantes.

Sabemos que cuando las escuelas y las familias trabajan juntas, a los niños les va mejor en la escuela. Existen diversas maneras a través de las que las familias pueden involucrarse en Amigos. Por favor, tómense el tiempo de conocer nuestras dos organizaciones de familias, madres, y encargados: el Consejo escolar de Amigos (ASC) y Friends of Amigos (FOA). El consejo escolar es un grupo compuesto por padres, madres, y encargados y miembros del personal que se reúnen mensualmente con la directora. FOA es una organización separada, sin fines de lucro y manejada por padres, madres y encargados de Amigos. Su participación en cualquiera de estos grupos será muy bienvenida. Para terminar, estoy deseando recibir a todas las familias y a los miembros del personal que regresan a la escuela y conocer a los nuevos miembros de nuestra comunidad. les pedimos a las familias que los niños lleguen a las 8:40AM para maximizar el tiempo de aprendizaje. Los alumnos que toman el autobús llegan entre las 8:20AM y las 8:35AM, siempre y cuando no haya algún imprevisto.
No se puede estacionar o aparcar en frente de la escuela durante la hora de llegada y de salida. Los autobuses necesitan que los alumnos puedan subir y bajar de los mismos y no pueden realizar esta tarea si carros están estacionados allí.

Primer día de clase de Junior Kindergarten y Kindergarten: 6 de septiembre.
Mes de la herencia hispana: 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre.
Celebración de la herencia hispana: 19 de octubre de 6-8PM
Reunión de FOA ("Friends of Amigos"): 4 de septiembre.
Reunión del Consejo escolar de Amigos (ASC): 12 de septiembre.
Noche del regreso a la escuela: 26 de septiembre.
