BroadWe are excited to be kicking off the second year of a partnership to bring Broad scientists into our 8th grade classrooms in order to gear up for the genetics and evolution unit that they will learn in the spring. The Broad Institute is the world's leading biomedical research institutes. The Broad is deeply committed to education and increasing the number of students entering and succeeding in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) careers. The role of these scientists will be to develop interactive presentations that make connections between the work happening in real research labs and what the students will be learning in class.

Javier Pineda is one of the Broad scientists that has made a great impression on our students. Javier first became interested in science in high school. Later, in college, he learned how chemistry and biology are intimately linked, and became interested in biological questions like how diseases work in the human body. Now Javier works in a lab that’s trying to answer these questions by running experiments to better understand how human cells respond to the drugs we use to treat cancer patients.
