Service learning is an opportunity for students to take the skills and content knowledge they are developing in their classes and apply it to addressing real-world issues. Our service learning class in 6th grade has started developing project ideas in three student-selected areas: social justice, food access, and climate change. Students are working in teams with teacher guidance to identify needs, organize resources, make community contacts, and schedule projects. Our goal is to have three student-designed projects up and running soon with an exhibition in the spring.
