Every Thursday, 6th grade students meet in small teacher led groups to tackle challenging math problems. Currently, many of the students are looking at different methods for determining the winner of an election. They are exploring a number of questions including but not limited to: Should the winner be the person or option that receives more than 50% of the votes (a majority)? Would a plurality (the most votes even if not a majority of the votes) be more equitable? How does an electoral college work and what are the reasons it might be used? What are other methods of determining the winner of an election? Which method do I think is the best? Many of our students are very engaged in the current presidential primaries. Through this exploration students have the opportunity to see how math is integral to our system of government and the choices we make as voters.
